Strict vs. Permissive...

A lot of people view my husband and I as "strict".
We've had a lot of children in our care over the years.
The number one priority for us is health and safety.

The funny thing is...
My OWN children do not view us as strict.

What's even more amazing...
Is that when we see other people's children misbehaving, acting up, or being wild...
IT DRIVES MY KIDS INSANE!

Because my boys have been raised with rules & boundaries, manners, respect, and a sense of calm...
When they see other kids acting out, it absolutely infuriates them.

It is quite amazing to see an 11 year old say, "That kid needs some discipline in his life!"
Or your 15 year old to say, "Those people have no parenting skills."

This is not to say my kids are perfect.
Far from it.
They have messy rooms, argue, etc.

BUT...

They will NEVER act out in public or for another adult.

They know how to have fun.
They love a good time.
But they also know the proper way to act.

I am proud of my boys.
I believe because of the way we have raised them, and they now see and know what is appropriate and what is not...
They are going to be wonderful fathers to their children some day.

Painting and moving furniture...a real test of your marriage, LOL!

My hubby and I have been married over 18 years.
We're "lifers"...in it forever...through thick and thin.
We love each other more as the years go by.

However...
It doesn't go without saying, that we DO have our trying times.

For example...
Many couples argue over money, parenting, etc.

US...
We argue every time we have to paint or move furniture.

This weekend...
We did both.

We painted AND moved furniture.

Needless to say...
There was lots of crankiness, crabbiness, arguing, etc.

However...
The one difference in us and many other couples...
Is we don't hold grudges.

We may argue and gripe the whole time we're painting and moving...
But the minute it's over...
So is the crabbiness and arguing.

We're back to our normal happy selves as if nothing ever happened.
LOL!

And now...
We have a freshly painted family room.
And our family/living room area has been moved downstairs and our daycare room has been relocated upstairs.

We still have a few loose ends to tie up.
But things are starting to come together and flow quite nicely.

We are both sore...and exhausted...and hated giving up our whole weekend to scrub, clean, disinfect, paint, and move.

But in the long run...
It's gonna be worth it all!

I will try to post pics soon!

So, remember the next time your patience is tested with your spouse...
Hang in there...you can make it!

"So, what do you and your husband do for fun?"

I met someone new tonight.
And one of their questions to me really caught me off guard.
I really didn't expect it.
And when they asked it, I didn't know what to say.

I was asked...
"What do you and your husband do for fun?"

Ummmmmm...
Wellllll...

I seriously was baffled.
I said, "Um, uh...well...we're pretty much homebodies...we enjoy just spending time together at home as a family."

And I'm sure this person probably thought it sounded very lame or boring.
But it's the truth.

We love spending our weekends together...as a family...just doing things the four of us enjoy together.
Trying new restaurants, watching tv together, making meals, playing games, taking walks, going shopping.
Honestly, it doesn't take much to entertain the four of us.

Of course both of my boys enjoy socializing with their friends.
And they do.

But my hubby and I?

Jamie doesn't go out and drink with the guys.
He doesn't play golf.
He doesn't need to "hang out" with the guys.

I don't do "ladies night out" with the girls.
I don't "shop till I drop".

We have friends...other couples...that we get together with periodically throughout the year on differenct occasions for meals and get-togethers.

The thing is too...
The person asking me was a younger fellow.
He and his wife have "little" kids (3 years, 18 months, and one on the way).
Truth of the matter is...
When you get to be our age, and have a tween and a teen...your life tends to revolve more around THEM.
You are shuttling them from here to there...school, church, activities, sports, band, etc.
You can't just up and leave on a trip without MAJOR preparation.
And forget about trips through the school year.
When you have a child start middle or high school...it is our feelings that pulling your child for any length of time really interferes with their instructional time at school.  There are parents that pull their kids for a week and jet off to Florida.   I can't even BEGIN to imagine what would happen if I pulled my son from Alegebra, Biology, Economics, and English Comp. for a week!  The instruction he'd miss would be so detrimental to his learning and grades!

So, what do we do for fun as a family?
Well...during the summer...we have a little more freedom.
And anyone who knows us knows that we LIVE for our trips to Mackinac Island.
It has become our home away from home.
We go at least 3 or 4 times a year if we can.
It's our dream to own property there someday.
We also take day trips...the zoo...new shopping excursions...Craig's Cruisers...new restaurants...and just driving around taking in God's beauty.

What do my husband and I do for fun?

Well, that's an easy question for my husband.
Sports, sports, sports, and more sports...oh, and throw in a pizza for good measure!  LOL!

For me...
It's become baking.
Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, cake pops, cookie pops, and other sugar crafts.
I love making bouquets and gift baskets out of my baking projects.

So there you have it.
That's our family's idea of fun.

No, we don't enter 5Ks, we don't bike across the state, we don't sky-dive, we don't go white water rapiding...
Some may call us boring.

But that's ok.
I'll take my family's idea of fun any day.
It suits us just fine.

Grateful.

It's time to be grateful.
It's time to realize all the blessings you have.
It's time to recognize all that's been given to you.
By others.
And by God.

It's time to quit whining.
It's time to quit complaining.
It's time to grow up.

You wanna do this.
You don't wanna do that.

You complain about what you don't have.
You don't see what you do have.

You take for granted all you've been blessed with by God.
You take for granted all you've been given by other people.

It's time to wake up.
It's time to thank God for all of His blessings!
It's time to be grateful for all the things other people have given you and all they do for you.

This comes across as a selfish spirit.
And it rubs people the wrong way.

Open your eyes.
You have so much to be thankful for!

ADD...I HATE YOU.

ADD...I hate you.
No one would've ever guessed.
I, myself would've never guessed.
Most people, when they hear the word "ADD" they think of hyper-active, disobedient, wild children.
I personally thought ADD was a "label"...a "cop-out" if you will for naughty kids.
I thought medications were for parents looking to "drug their kids into calmness".

Boy, was I wrong.

In middle school, my oldest son started struggling with his schoolwork.
Oh, he still made the honor roll each term.
He got all As and Bs.
But every night was a struggle with him and my husband.
My husband yelling because he thought our son wasn't paying attention...
And our son, staring out the window, off into space, or losing focus every few minutes.
My husband would have to reteach everything our son was supposed to have learned at school that day.  We thought it was bad teachers.
By 8th grade, we thought it was our son being lazy.

By spring of 8th grade, a friend talked to me about ADD.
I read a book.
It discribed my son in detail.
By 9th grade, the struggles continued and we knew something had to be done.
Could our son have ADD?

"No"...his teachers said..."He's so quiet, so well behaved, he gets good grades."
"No"...we said...he's so mellow, so laid-back, such a good boy, so calm.
But I talked with the guidance counselor who told me I should talk to our family doctor.
We were referred to a psychologist for testing.

After a VERY long and VERY extensive testing procedure which took over two months...
We found out that he DID indeed have ADD.
Not the "hyper-activity" aspect...but a very severe case of distractability, lack of focus, and memory issues.
He was a prime candidate for Concerta the psychologist told us.
By the way...I LOVED our pyschologist.
Not one to jump the gun and label kids or drug them up.
But in our case, Evan DID need some medication.
And I was ok with that.

No one could believe he had it.
Because he's so "good",  so "calm", so "well-behaved".

We still struggle.
We don't know if he's on the right dosage.
He is great about DOING his homework each day.
It's just remembering to TURN IT IN...that causes issues.
Right then and there...that gives him a "MISSING" or "LATE" mark.
And he still continues to get good grades...mostly As and Bs.
But sometimes he'll struggle in a particular class if a teacher's style of teaching doesn't mesh with his learning style.
It's so tiring EXHAUSTING reteaching lessons, going through his binders, asking him daily if he has any quizes, tests, or projects coming up.
And he still forgets.
The memory issue is causing great struggles for him.
We have tried every technique I can think of for him to remember things.
Nothing yet has worked.
He forgets he has a test...and then...boom.
There goes that grade.
And we spend all term having to recover to bring that grade back up to an A or B level.
And usually he does recover.
I have to explain to every teacher (usually multiple times a year because they forget) about his condition.
Many are very helpful and will e-mail me assignments, quiz dates, etc.
Many simply don't care.
I feel awful that I labeled him "lazy" before his diagnosis.
He's not the most motivated, but with encouragment and support, he's an awesome student.
We are working hard to help him stay organized and focused.

I just wish the teachers understood how severe his condition is.
I just wish they understood how involved we are in his education.
I just with they knew how much we care and want the best for him.

And I say all this to say...

ADD...
I HATE YOU!!!

You have caused so much pain, exhaustion, and frustration for my son!!!

You have literally worn myself and my husband out!!!

You are a disease that so many people don't even understand and think we use as a cop-out!!!

I refuse to make my son a victim to you!
I refuse to give him special treatment!

He WILL succeed!
He CAN succeed!
ALL ADD children can succeed with the proper guidance from parents and teachers.

I will FIGHT to the death for my son!
When teachers don't care.
When he struggles.
You will NOT take hold of him!

You are a MEDICAL CONDITION!!!
You are NOT a LABEL or a COP-OUT!!!
We will NOT play VICTIM to you!!!

My son is SMART!

And we will always do our best to leave your nasty name
OUT OF OUR HOME!

Because we are OVERCOMERS through Christ who gives us strength!

I know, I know...long time, no post...

I think every mommy blogger goes through these stretches...
Where you stop or postpone blogging for a while.

I know for me...it's not so much a matter of nothing happening...
In fact, it's quite the opposite.

It's TOO MUCH happening!

We're all doing well.

Enjoying the unseasonably gorgeous weather for March.
Supposed to be in the 70s today and tomorrow.

I have been busy with baking...cookies and cupcake orders.
I completed a "thank-you" basket of cookies and also have another order to ship to a friend on Tuesday.

This Friday is Nate's last Fun Night at Lincoln.
We'll be going to that.
One last night of carnival games, raffles, and prizes...
And then it's moving on to middle school for him!

Speaking of middle school, he has Transition Night on the 26th.
More of an informational night for parents.
He'll be going one day within the next month or so to visit with his friends during school hours...
They get to check things out and have lunch there.
Big stuff!

Ev is still plugging along...
I think he's just ready for summer to be here and be done with school for the year.

I am still working hard on my med. trans. program.
Getting as much done as I can in between baking orders, daycare, and family life.
Hoping the job market will be promising when I finish up!

Jam and I are both busy with the daycare.
It keeps us hopping, that's for sure.
It's great having both of us here for it...
One can relieve the other at any time.

Well, that's our hum-drum, yet very-busy life for now.
Hopefully I'll have more posts as spring and summer arrive.
We have a couple mini vacations planned and some day trips as well.

Hope you're having a wonderful March!

Here's what's happenin'...

I have no pictures for this post.
How boring am I?
Very!
I feel like I've been neglecting my blog.
And it's not that I've really forgotten it.
I think about it everyday.
But I just feel there's nothing important to write about!
LOL!

Well...
I'll try to at least update you on what's going on with us.

I am still plugging along with my studies.
I am more than halfway through with my medical transcription program.
It is "go at your own pace" program.
In some ways, I'm really grateful for this because there are days that I couldn't fit one more thing on my plate...like an assignment or quiz...especially trying to balance this with running a daycare, a baking business, and raising a family.
In other ways, I wish I did have deadlines...because it's easy to put it on the backburner.
My instructor told me that it "COULD" be done in five months...IF you put in 20 hours a week.
That was my goal...ORIGINALLY.
And I FLEW through the first two courses.
Then came course three.
The actual typing of reports.
I have been on course three for...
Oh gosh...I don't know...maybe three months?...maybe four?
Anyway...I will be finishing it up this month and moving on to course four.
There are five courses in the program.
So...even though I didn't hit my goal (to be done by Christmas/first of the year)...I am still pushing myself and making myself work on it every day.
My new goal is to be done by summer...fingers crossed!
I would love to find work by fall.
That is my new goal.

So what else is new...
The boys are also plugging along in school.
It doesn't seem possible the school year is half over.
Nate is in fifth grade and Evan is a sophomore.
How can it be...that Nate will be in middle school next year and Evan a junior?
Let's just move on to another topic.
That makes me feel old.

Nate is doing baseball camp.
It's a two Saturday program put on by the rec department.
The high school coach and varsity team run it.
I was quite impressed by the organization of it all.
He really learned a lot!
He is planning to play on a team again this spring through the rec department.

Evan isn't doing any sports right now, though he's thinking about soccer next year.
He's still in the band and they have a spring concert coming up.
The Disney trip was cancelled due to so many students not being able to afford to go.
Instead, they will be going to Chicago.
They have an amazing itinerary lined up!
I told him I'm jealous and want to go with him!
LOL!
WinterFest Dance is this Saturday and he still hasn't made up his mind whether he'll go or not.
He's still debating on asking a certain someone.
Things are up in the air.
It's always last minute with him.
Drives a mother nuts, LOL!

Jam and I are still running the daycare/preschool.
That keeps us busy.
It has it's ups and downs.
We have dreams for the future...
I am hoping sooner than later!

Winter has been crazy here in Michigan.
We've hardly had any snow this winter.
We've seen more grass than snow!
We've had warmer temperatures and a lot of rain.
It's been really strange.
I kind of miss the snow!

We've all been very healthy this year...knock on wood!
I have a slight sore throat right now but I'm fighting it all the way and refusing to get sick!

My baking business is steady.
I have at least one or two requests a month.
I like it that way.
You can visit my baking blog, website, Facebook page, or Twitter at the links on my sidebar of this blog!

Like I said...not a lot new.
We're pretty boring.
But I like it that way.
No news is good news.
TTFN!

My Mom And My Birthday Celebrations...

Somehow I think I forgot to post about my mom's and my birthday celebration!
We usually always celebrate together because our birthdays are only five days apart.
We went to my sister's house for dinner...so there were all ten of us there!
We had a scrumptious dinner...taco bar!
All the fixin's plus my sister's homemade guacamole, yum!
I made cakes for my mom and me.
One would have been plenty, but I had several new techniques I wanted to try out...plus I had bought a new decorating tip, LOL!
So two it was!
We had a great time visiting and celebrating.
Family get-togethers are so much fun.

I love my teenager!

I love my teenager.
I do.

Lately, all I hear about on Facebook...from friends, acquaintances, and things in the news is how awful teenagers are.

One friend says her teenager hates her.
One friend's teen is failing out of school.
One friend's teen is sneaking out.
One friend's teen is bad-mouthing her and her father.
Another friend comments on how weird and awful teens are out shopping.
People are saying how disrescpectul teens are.
All I hear is negativity about today's teens.

I wanted to start this post with something positive...like a quote or verse about the positive aspects of teens.
Searched all over the internet.
Couldn't find ONE positive thing I liked!

What is wrong with this picture?!?

First of all...let me say...if you think that ALL teenagers today are warped, weird, disrectful, mouthy, filthy-mouthed kids...
YOU ARE WRONG.

There are A LOT of wonderful teenagers out there!

I happen to know a lot of them!
I happen to LIVE WITH one of them!

I may be a little biased...as any mother is...but I am not blind.
I know my kid.
He is respectful...to adults and peers.
He is empathetic.
He is kind and generous.
He has strong faith.
He hates foul language.
He hates seeing people mistreated.
He is quiet and reserved.
He's fun to hang out with.
I love being his mom.

His friends are like this too.
He has a great circle of friends.
Guys and girls alike.
They are respectful.
They call myself and my husband Mr. and Mrs. James.
They are well-behaved.
I enjoy their company.

So the next time you find yourself "generalizing" a teenager and saying they're all rebelious, disrespectful, freaks of nature...just remember, there are just as many WONDERFUL teenagers out there (if not more).

I just had to share this because of all the negativity I've been seeing on Facebook about teens.
I think it's a real shame that they get such a bad rap.
I will agree that there are A LOT of foul-mouthed, disrespectful, gossipy, mean, half-clothed, weird ones...
But I will also stick up for the other half who are WONDERFUL young people to hang around!!!

I love the teens in my life!
